PEACE BOAT: New role for Ocean Dream

The latest ship to serve as the Peace Boat was in Europe during June while on her first cruise for the organisation. In 29 years the Peace Boat Organisation has undertaken 76 voyages, using a variety of ships. The early voyages were fairly local to Japan, but between November 1990 and January 1991 the first round-the-world voyage was completed.

Now the Peace Boat generally undertakes three or four round-the-world voyages each year. The current ship being used by the organisation is Ocean Dream (1981/35,265gt), built as Tropicale, the first new ship for the still young Carnival Cruise Lines. When too small for that fleet, she passed to Costa in 2001, becoming Costa Tropicale, and four years later was with P&O in Australia as Pacific Star.

In 2008 she was sold to Royal Caribbean subsidiary Pullmantur, at which point she took her current name. As former Peace Boat Oceanic (1956/38,772gt) now seems to be heading for the breakers, Atlantic Star (1984/46,087gt) is left as the sole surviving steam turbine cruise ship currently in service.
