CONTAINER VESSEL: Coastal Isle grounds off Bute

Early in the morning of 2 July the container vessel Coastal Isle, while making her way from Belfast to Greenock Container Terminal on a regular voyage, ran aground near the Isle of Bute. The 258TEU vessel operates a regular service to Belfast from both Greenock and Liverpool.

The ship was proceeding through the Great Cumbrae with a crew of ten at 0457 when, due to what was thought to be a navigational error, she struck rocks and sent out a distress call to the Clyde Coastguard. The tug Anglegarth proceeded to the scene, arriving at 0720. With assistance from the tug, the 3,125gt vessel was refloated on the rising tide at 0825 and was escorted to Greenock Ocean Terminal, the crew checking the vessel’s watertight integrity on the way. The bow of the vessel had sustained slight damage, but that there was no water ingress.

Coastal Isle, operated by Burak Schiffahrt of Germany, was built in 1991 in Germany as Johanna but has operated regular services between UK and Ireland as Coastal Isle since 1997.
