COSTA CRUISES: Allegra back to her best

Following her engine-room fire in the Indian Ocean in February and subsequent return to Italy, Costa Allegra (1969/28,597gt, pictured) has been moved from the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa to that of Mariotti, and in late July appeared to be in immaculate condition externally.

As noted previously (SM, Sept), there was a suggestion that the ship might be returned to service with Costa, and her current condition suggests this has now become more likely. Originating as the containership Annie Johnson in 1969, most of her hull is 43 years old (she was lengthened in 1991), but her passenger accommodation, engines and superstructure are little more than 20 years old, and date from the time that Mariotti transformed her into Costa Allegra.
