HOLLAND AMERICA: Volendam to the rescue

Holland America Lines’ Volendam (1999/61,214gt) came to the rescue of 70 passengers aboard the Alaska sightseeing vessel Baranof Wind, which is operated by Allen Marine Tours, after she hit rocks in Glacier Bay and started taking on water on 19 August. Although the ship was in no danger of sinking, the passengers were taken offas a precaution.

It appears Baranof Wind’s captain was attempting to manoeuvre close to the shore to give the passengers a better look at some brown bears. Two further passengers were evacuated by a Coast Guard vessel, but the crew remained on board. Baranof Wind was later taken to her owner’s shipyard at Sitka for investigation and repair. The rescued passengers were taken to Bartlett Cove, where they were transferred to another Allen vessel.
