DOVER STRAIT: MyFerryLink targets profit in two years

Despite admitting the opening weeks of MyFerryLink sailings had carried an ‘immeasurably low’ volume of traffic between Dover and Calais, UK managing director Robin Wilkins believes the service, launched in August, could be profitable within two years.

Created by Eurotunnel using former SeaFrance vessels Berlioz and Rodin, MyFerryLink now has a website up and running and is looking to make an impact during the Christmas and New Year period, while it is still planned to introduce freight ro-ro vessel Nord Pas-de-Calais in mid-November.Mr Wilkins, previously SeaFrance’s UK managing director, said: ‘There is a long way to go and we always said this is not a short-term project. Ideally, we would not have started when we did and we’re not going to see an uplift in bookings until the Christmas market.’

The UK Office of Fair Trading’s report on Eurotunnel ‘s purchase of the three ships and the creation of MyFerryLink was due for publication on 29 October, more than a month later than planned.
