ICE BREAKER: Ice-class ore carrier

Montreal-based Fednav has ordered a 31,500dwt icebreaking bulk carrier from Japan’s Sumitomo Corp and Universal Shipbuilding Corp that will be used to transport nickel and copper concentrates between Canada and Europe on behalf of mining group Canadian Royalties. To be built at Universal’s Tsu shipyard, and classed by Det Norske Veritas, the new vessel will be built to Polar Class 4 classification for delivery by the end of this year.

Fednav already operates two of the world’s most powerful ice-breaking commercial vessels, the 1978-built Arctic, of 28,094dwt, and the 31,992dwt Umiak I, which was completed in 2006.
