CONTAINER SHIPS: Wan Hai: naming by the number

Taiwan’s Wan Hai Lines is one of the world’s few container carriers that does not name its ships but rather numbers them. Recently it has taken delivery of Wan Hai 103 and Wan Hai 105 as part of a 14-ship order placed with Taiwan’s CSBC Corp, formerly the China Shipbuilding Corporation.

Unlike larger lines, Wan Hai prefers smaller and medium-sized ships for its long-haul and intra-Asia feeder trades. The 1,040dwt Wan Hai 103 and Wan Hai 105 can accommodate just 1,040TEUs and have a speed of 19 knots, perfect for short sea work. Prior to their delivery, CSBC had handed over Wan Hai 512 and Wan Hai 513, two larger 57,830dwt vessels for long-haul service agreements Wan Hai maintains with other carriers.
