Various operators – Hurricane Sandy aftermath

Quite apart from the loss of life and tremendous destruction across the East Coast of the USA, Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 caused rather more disruption to cruise schedules than most hurricanes. Carnival Cruise Lines was the worst affected, with seven ships either being diverted or having cruises shortened. Carnival Pride’s seven-night Bahamas and Florida cruise from Baltimore was cancelled, as was Carnival Glory’s 28 October departure from Norfolk, while Carnival Miracle returned to New York a day early, on 28 October, and sailed on her next cruise on the same day, thus lengthening that voyage by a day. Carnival Dream, Carnival Ecstasy and Carnival Glory each lost a day out of their cruises.

The chaos was not limited to the USA’s East Coast, however, as Oceania Cruises’ Marina sailed a day late from Istanbul as she was waiting for passengers who had been unable to leave the USA by their planned route, several major airports being closed.Brooklyn’s Red Hook cruise terminal was expected to remain closed until late December 2012 due to flooding.
