SHORT SEA SHIPPING – Ups and downs for Wilson

The Norwegian based short-sea company Wilson ASA of Bergen has reported increased revenue and profits, despite uncertainty over economic development in Europe. The Wilson fleet consists of 111 vessels, which range from 1,500 to 10,000dwt, 87 of which are managed by the Wilson Group. The number of owned vessels in the fleet makes Wilson one of the largest shipping operators in the European short-sea industry. However, the company had less good news when the 2011-built 8,321dwt general cargo vessel Wilson Newport ran aground on 21 October 2012 at 0430 in the Adriatic off Greece. The vessel had sailed from Gemlik, Turkey for Antwerp with a cargo of soda and ten Russian crew on board, but she sailed straight towards the island, staying on the same course for more than ten hours. No water ingress or pollution was reported, although the tug Megas Alexandros stood by. RC
