NOVEMBER 2013 ISSUE
Despite the weather not being too kind, I was pleased to spend a day on board the preserved steamer Shieldhall on 17 August and meet competition winner Colin Flood during an enjoyable cruise down Southampton Water and back. We were welcomed by Shieldhall’s officials onto the historic steamer for the trip, which took in the Old Gaffers’ Race off Cowes and also included live music in the saloon, as well as a range of snacks and meals.
The trip was one of many undertaken by the busy historic steamer during the summer, and the volunteers are to be congratulated for running such a fine operation. A day out on Shieldhall is thoroughly recommended, as not only can you enjoy the atmosphere on board a preserved steamer, but you can also get behind the scenes, visit the bridge and and see the engine room at first hand. It’s also a great place to watch the varied shipping activities of Southampton Water, with cruise ships, car carriers, ferries and tankers all in the mix.
I understand that next year will be busier than ever for Shieldhall, with some special events planned. So anyone wanting a good day out, visit www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk and see what events are upcoming.
