Container ships: Boxboat efficiency from Korea

South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) yard at Gunsan has delivered the 5,000TEU super-efficient container ships Alexandros and Aristotelis to Capital Shipmanagement as the first of five sisters, the remaining three to be handed over within the next few weeks. Classed by Lloyds Register, the twin newbuildings are equipped with AMP (Alternative Marine Power) systems to allow the ships to be plugged into a shore-based electrical supply while berthed.

They are fitted with X-twisted full spade rudders, which prevent cavitation and associated erosion problems developing due to rotational flow aft of the propeller. The 62,335dwt ships have also been designed for one-man bridge control and are capable of sailing at slow speeds. The former vessel is now sailing as Hyundai Prestige. JS
