With the severe weather affecting the whole of the UK in December 2010, local authorities were under pressure to obtain sufficient quantities of road salt. With Scottish roads snow covered, help came from Peru in the shape of the bulk carrier Great River (2004/19,829gt, below), which brought 28,600 tons of road salt.

She left Peru on 2 November and after a journey of just under a montharrived at Leith on the evening of 28 November. The salt was distributed throughout Scotland by smaller general cargo vessels, including Faversham Ship’s Valiant (1992/1,512gt/2,366dwt), which sailed with a full load for Aberdeen on 2 December.
