Seaspan Corp orders new container ships

Hong Kong’s Seaspan Corp has ordered ten 7,000TEU vessels, taking its order book from the past ten months to 70 ships, with a total capacity of 839,000TEU, nearing its two million TEU capacity goal, reports London’s Loadstar.

The portfolio includes two 24,000TEU Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV), and 25 ships of 7,000TEU, with 15 dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered.

The latest $1 billion newbuild order, for Jiangsu Yangzijiang shipping group-built scrubber-fitted ships will see deliveries commence in Q2 of 2024 and run through to the final quarter.

‘With our previously announced order of 15 dual-fuelled 7,000TEU vessels, this newbuild order is further evidence of the strong customer demand for this vessel size, which is uniquely suited to replace the global fleet’s aging cohort of 4,000 to 9,000 TEU vessels.’ said Seaspan CEO Bing Chen.

Seaspan’s current operating fleet of 131 vessels, with a combined capacity of 1.1 million TEU, will soar to over 200 at two million TEU after the newbuilds are received.
