Virgin Voyages lays keel for first ship

The keel for the first ship of the new Virgin Voyages cruise line was laid on 31 October at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy.

Completion of the vessel is due in 2020 with two others following in 2021 and 2022. All three will be built in Italy by Fincantieri.

The ships will weigh 110,000gt and measure 278m long by 38m wide with more than 1,400 guest cabins that can host over 2,700 passengers and 1,150 crew members.

They are being built at an estimated cost of $710 million each and will be equipped with technology designed to turn waste water into electricity, which will reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

The livery was conceptualized by Ben Christie and David Azurdia from Magpie Studio in London, while RWD of Beaulieu England created the funnel.
