Maersk names its 11th dual-fuel vessel Albert Maersk in Mumbai

A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) marked a significant milestone in Mumbai on 28 February 2025 with the naming ceremony of its newest dual-fuel methanol container vessel, Albert Maersk, during its maiden voyage to India.

The vessel, the eleventh in Maersk’s fleet capable of operating on methanol, represents the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices.

Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller – Maersk, led the ceremony, which was attended by prominent dignitaries including the Honourable Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, and the Honourable Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, alongside diplomats, government officials, customers, partners, and employees.

Hosting this event in India highlights the country’s potential to emerge as a major hub for producing and supplying green methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen-based fuels, given the global shift towards greener maritime operations.

Maersk’s focus on green fuel production in India is a forward-thinking step that aligns with the nation’s vision of becoming a global maritime powerhouse. The naming of this vessel goes beyond tradition—it embodies trust, collaboration, and a collective aspiration for a sustainable future.

Albert Maersk is part of a series of 18 dual-fuel methanol vessels set for delivery in 2024 and 2025. Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, it boasts a capacity of 16,592TEU, underlining Maersk’s commitment to decarbonizing shipping and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

Bio- and e-methanol, capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% compared to conventional fossil fuels, are critical to these efforts.
