New cruise ship Sun Princess sets sail on maiden voyage

Princess Cruises’ newest addition to the fleet, Sun Princess, set sail on its maiden voyage on 28 February 2024.

The new 4,300-guest cruise ship embarked on the ten -day Grand Mediterranean cruise roundtrip from Civitavecchia (Rome) and will take guests to visit Naples, Italy; Crete, Greece; Kusadasi, Turkey (for Ephesus); Athens, Greece; Sicily, Italy; Mallorca, Spain; and Barcelona.

“This is an historic day as our new Sun Princess sets sail on her inaugural voyage and our guests get to experience our sensational, next-level, Love Boat firsthand,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president.

“The ship is a magnificent showcase of advanced design, technology and craftsmanship, with elevated spaces and experiences all focused on taking the Princess vacation experience to a new level.”

Sun Princess will spend her inaugural season exploring the Mediterranean with Greek Isles and Turkey. The 175,000gt ship has 2,150 cabins and a crew of 1,600.

Sun Princess is the first ship in Princess’ fleet to be powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), to reduce emissions and marine gasoil and minimise the ship’s environmental footprint.

She is the third ship to carry the Sun Princess name, adding to a legacy of the first ship sailing from 1974 to 1988 and the second ship which operated from 1995 to 2020.
