New OOCL container ship named and enters service

The 165,000dwt OOCL Sunflower, one of a series of ten vessels ordered by OOCL, was officially named at China’s Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (DACKS) on 11 January 2025. The ship, which measures 367m by 51m, will serve the company’s Trans-Pacific Trade ECX1 service, like its sister vessels.

The new Panamax unit is equipped with exhaust gas cleaning systems, known as scrubbers, and incorporates other advanced technologies for enhanced environmental performance and operational efficiency.

Michael Xu, Director and Member of the Executive Committee of OOCL, stated, “We are confident that this ship will significantly enhance our ability to connect the world and serve our customers in future voyages.

“As we look ahead to 2025, the shipping industry is set to face both opportunities and challenges. OOCL’s fleet structure will be further optimised, with more efficient and environmentally friendly new vessels set to deliver and sail, positioning us for future growth.”

The first ship in this series, OOCL Bauhinia, was delivered and christened in early December 2024 at DACKS. With a length of 366.99m, a depth of 30.2 e, and a beam of 51m, it is among the largest vessels able to navigate the new locks of the Panama Canal.
