NUCLEAR CARGO SHIP: Ship returns to service

It has been reported that the 25-year-old Pacific Pintail, a nuclear cargo ship, is continuing to transport radioactive material after plans for a £44m new ship were scrapped.

The Pacific Pintail has been rescued from the scrapyard in Cumbria after two years to continue transporting plutonium and other radioactive materials around the world.

Unsurprisingly questions over maritime safety have been raised over the re-use of Pacific Pintail, now re-named Oceanic Pintail. The ship will take multiple cargoes of radioactive waste from the Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria to countries in Europe, and there are also plans for other international shipments.
