Saga’s Spirit of Discovery hosts special Coronation celebrations

On 5 May 2023 Saga Cruises was proud that Camilla, Queen Consort is the Godmother of its ocean cruise ship, Spirit of Discovery and in honour of the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles and Queen Camilla the cruise line is promising its guests the ‘best of British celebrations’ on board.

Spirit of Discovery, which was christened by the then Duchess of Cornwall on 5 July 2019, will be departing from Portsmouth International Port on Coronation Day (6 May) on a 15-night cruise of Spain and the Balearics.

The cruise has proven very popular and the on-board team will be making sure the Coronation is celebrated in style.

Proceedings will start in the early hours of May 6, when coverage of the event for the UK will start to be screened in the ship’s Playhouse Theatre and will run throughout the day for guests to view.

Guests will be welcomed on-board by crew in their full blues uniform and champagne and British sparkling wine from Kent’s Balfour Brut Estate will be served all day.

A specially created cocktail – the English Garden Martini – will also be served to celebrate the special occasion in a nod to Kent, the Garden of England and Saga’s home, along with other very British options such as Pimm’s and lemonade and Buck’s Fizz.

The Orpheus Male Voice Choir will perform before the ship departs at 5pm at which time guests will be invited to the ship’s decks for the singing of the National Anthem and to toast Their Majesties King Charles and Queen Camilla. Of course, bunting and Union Flags will also adorn the ship in true British style.

Following dinner that evening, which will feature the famous Coronation quiche on the menu, the talented entertainment team will put on a special Coronation Celebration Show followed by a party in the ship’s Britannia Lounge.
