SH Diana departs Ushuaia for first dedicated Antarctic cruise of season after propulsion motor repair

After a prompt repair to one of its electric propulsion motors, Swan Hellenic’s SH Diana departed Ushuaia for its first dedicated Antarctic cruise of the 2024-2025 season.

The technical team, organized by Wärtsilä, completed the repair and all related tests, allowing the ship to sail less than 40 hours behind schedule. Following sea trials and minor adjustments in the Beagle Channel, SH Diana set out for its Antarctic cultural expedition cruise.

The propulsion motor issue was detected on the 12th day of a 20-night cruise from South Africa to Antarctica. For safety, Captain Svein-Rune Stromnes diverted to Ushuaia, the cruise’s port of arrival. Spare parts and technicians were mobilized quickly, enabling repairs to start immediately upon docking on December 1.

Swan Hellenic CEO Andrea Zito praised the efficient coordination that minimized the delay. Special excursions and onboard experiences were arranged for guests during the downtime. With ample schedule margins, the company is confident the delay won’t impact the planned Antarctic explorations, ensuring guests can fully enjoy their expeditions.
