Tanker retrofit to burn LNG

Sweden’s Furetank Rederi A/B has elected to have its 17,557dwt tanker Fure West refit to burn LNG by having the vessel’s MaK M 43 C main diesel retrofitted in-hull to a 7 cylinder M 46 dual fuel engine with each cylinder developing 900 kW of rated power.

Caterpillar Marine, which supplies Mak engines, is supplying the complete gas system for the 2006-built tanker, including bunker stations, vaporizer and two 4.15m by 24m 255-cubic-meter LNG storage tanks fabricated by Taylor-Wharton.

The project will be the second MaK engine dual fuel retrofit carried out and follows a similar undertaking last year involving Anthony Veder’s 6,554dwt LNG carrier Coral Anthelia.
