Public consultations have been instigated over the controversial question of Sunday sailings from Harris, the only major centre in Scotland’s Western Isles that now lacks a service. Caledonian MacBrayne carried almost 20,000 Sunday passengers and more than 6,000 cars between Stornoway and mainland port Ullapool after starting Sunday services last year.
Ironically, the CalMac ferry Hebrides (2000/5,506gt) sails empty from Tarbert, Harris each Sunday to Lochmaddy, North Uist, before providing a service to Uig, Skye, and the company would like to take passengers and vehicles over the whole journey. CalMac stress no final decision will be taken until the views of Harris residents have been fullyassessed.
